Version 4

It’s rough around the edges, and it’s nothing fancy, but dammit, it’s mine. I’ve learnt WordPress during the building of this theme, and that should make me proud.

(except for the part where it doesn’t matter that much in the long run)

I’ve still yet to figure out where to put the sidebar stuff, or if I’m going to stay with the asides in their current format, to the style that I did once upon a time. Or if I should introduce colours, effects and all those fancy things that generally are completely useless to the blog. What this does for me though is refocus: it gets the blog back to its basic purpose, which is to carry a message.

Inspired a little by Subtraction, assisted a little by innumerable WordPress themes, indebted to the brilliance of XRAY, the result of about 4 discarded designs which were way too busy, I hope this makes me a little more involved because it was my own product.

Completely untested outside the Mac. I’ll have to look at it in IE at work tomorrow.

Lemme know what you think! Remember, this is raw 0.1 stuff, so it’s open to assault and rework.

  1. Hmm, IE doesn’t do PNG very well does it =/

Jack: When I switched, I actively stayed away from Boot camp/Parallels/VMWare so that I would actually use Mac OS and learn the system. Now, I’m holding out until absolutely necessary :)

  2. Looks good! :)

On my computer (tiny laptop [1024 x 768]) on the main page the furthermost character on the right in posts is kinda chopped off. This does not occur on the single post page.

Oh, and I’ve now tested it in IE (lol, i’ve never used it before on this computer – couldn’t find the icon :P) and its the same as Firefox if not a little worse :S

  3. gah, smaller resolutions. Knew I was forgetting something.

What’s worse in IE, other than the stupid PNG processing of the title?

  4. Looks golden in Firefox, 1280×1024. After doing the same as Kirsty and actually searching for an IE icon, I agree about the PNG processing – not nearly as smooth in IE, and the whites aren’t as white. Maybe Firefox uses Napisan?

  5. Nathan: with Oxy Action plus! Firefox is my official recommendation. Banish that IE icon to the dustbin of history!

Kirsty: tightened it by 10 px so it should just squeeze in on 1024×768. Looking at my regular visitor stats though, over 70% have 1280 (and 60% of all visitors have FF), and I think it’s about time designs started to move on :P It’s like years ago when 800×600 was ditched!

(I could go for a flexifixed design here, but that is a lot of CSS heavy lifting… ok maybe just because I’m curious.)

Jack: Yeah, Outlook might be worth having for mail heavy lifting, but I manage with Mail.app (and anyway GMail does the heavy lifting if i really need). Can’t see a reason to use IE except for testing or sites that “Require” it.

  6. Hey, I’ve been using Firefox for ages, I just wanted to see how it looked to the lesser folk. :p

  7. Oh. Well, Outlook and IE are necessary for me. I know it’s hard to believe but at work we have a very sophisticated Exchange setup and everyone swears by it.

Also a lot of intranet sites make me use IE. They don’t actually require IE but IE can access some Kerberos authentication layer and logon with domain credentials, Firefox doesn’t do this and prompts you for each and every site and then sends a username and password in plain text.

Also, you cannot count on my resolution. I run a Mac which means my windows are never the full width of the screen. (But MBP is 1440px across so you shouldn’t even have to think about it)

  8. Nathan: lol, I didn’t mean it like that – I was saying in more general terms :)

Jack: ah, didn’t realise you used your laptop at work. I’d give anything to use Outlook at work – Lotus Notes is such a dog of an application, and we’re running a version from 5 years ago that feels like it’s 10 years old at that. Ugly. I have the same thing with IE at work as you, though I live in Firefox 90% of the day.

Statcounter gives me a good rundown of resolutions, so I’m fairly aware of the typical res/setup. And yeah, it’s funny how in Mac nothing runs “full screen”. As I’ve mentioned before, I totally love Expose.

  9. Thanks :)

I know it’s a pain, but I can’t get higher resolution on my tiny screen and I like having a tiny screen (and laptop) to take to uni.

All the computers at my work are on 1024 x 768, I’m not sure it’s yet time to move on :S
