On the Train Today

A couple, probably well into their 60s, if not their 70s. They’re both reading a single broadsheet paper, different parts, each holding their side up with the “outer” hand. In the middle, their hands are clasped lovingly together, assuring each other they are still here, still committed to their relationship, to each other.

My cynicism took a break for that half hour.

  1. So cute! although it’ll be a bit hard if they finished what they’re reading and move onto something else…..

but so cute non the less ^_^

  2. your cynicism needs to find its female companion. the middle of the paper would have been kept up by tension from the outside…ahem…sorry i’ll stop being the nerdy engineer that i am.

  3. You’re not cynical at all!

Ergo, your cynicism cannot find its female companion because it doesn’t exist. Jaded and bitter, yes, but it’s not exactly a thick brush that you’ve applied to all parts of your life. Cynicism is a worldview and I so very rarely see you assume the worst of people.

Can you feel how jaded and bitter you feel now that yet another one of your friends has told you that “dude, you need a gf”. Can you feel that anger and spitefulness rising? Dull the rage and then apply that feeling to everything in your life; that’s cynicism.

  4. chicky, it was flat on their knees.

Fay, if I recall correctly, they were reading pretty much the same articles together, and discussing them quietly when they finished before moving on.

Jack, can’t you be cynical about certain aspects of life? such as the prospect of lasting relationships that still mean something?
